LAKE WEDOWEE HISTORY

Lake Wedowee or R. L. Harris is an Alabama Power Lake, located in Randolph County, Alabama. Randolph County located in the east central Alabama’s Piedmont Plateau part of the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains.

Lake Wedowee, created by the impoundment of the Big and Little Tallapoosa Rivers by the R. L. Harris Dam.Beautiful Lake Wedowee is 9,870 acres, with pristine clear water, 367 miles of shoreline and is 121 feet deep.   The rivers that fill Lake Wedowee do not flow thru any metro cities before pouring into the lake. Giving Lake Wedowee bragging rights that it is one of the cleanest lakes in Alabama.

Lake Wedowee offers many recreational attractions such as: boating, kayaking, swimming, fishing and camping. Fishing brings the most attraction to the lake. It is known to be one of the finest lakes in the Southeast because the quality of the water and its sizeable bass population. There are many different species of fish in the lake that include crappie, largemouth bass, spotted bass, channel catfish, and flathead catfish.

Over the years the community has grown as the lake continues to develop.   Lake visitors come from all across the County, and have made a substantial impact on the town’s economy. The Lake Wedowee area is fast becoming an attractive place for retirees.

Lake Wedowee’s quality of life is high and its cost of living is low.

The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) is the state agency responsible for the conservation and management of Alabama‘s natural resources including state parks, state lands, wildlife and aquatic resources. ADCNR also issues hunting and fishing licenses for the state. The department promotes wise stewardship and enjoyment of the state’s natural resources through five divisions: Marine Police, Marine Resources, State Lands, State Parks and Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries.
